Northern California
Fostering mutually-beneficial relationships to create a better, more sustainable future for the North Coast.
Some of the largest Native American tribes in California have called the North Coast home for centuries. North Coast tribes take great pride in their rich history of subsisting on the productive fisheries and landscapes of these areas. Tribal governments play a critical role in natural resource management and business development in all aspects of community well-being.
In the ongoing conversation about offshore wind development in Northern California, it is crucial to include all North Coast Native American sovereign nations at the center of discussion and debate. In recent years, state and federal governments have taken action to implement this inclusion into development processes. Organizations such as the California Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force and the State-Tribal Ocean Renewable Energy Working Group laid the groundwork to formalize ways for developers to gain input from Native American governments and partner with Native American communities. These relationships have become key factors in the offshore lease nomination and approval process.
